Auto Rickshaws large numbers are available. They are fitted with Meters, but they are scarcely utilized.
Always it is better to get a quotation from the driver for your destination, before getting in to them.
To avoid the irritation, one can use prepaid auto rickshaws - This facility is available at Railway Stations, Bus Stands. You pay the amount in advance at the counter, before you start travelling.
Shared Auto Rickshaws are available for shorter distances only in certain areas.
Nominal amount is charged, based on the Distance travelled by each person. They accomodate 6 to 8 passengers.
Call Taxis are operated by many. All are fitted with digital electronic meters.
During the past few years, vehicular traffic has increased manifold. The roads in Coimbatore can not accomodate their running, Parking etc.
So for driving comfortably, the Traffic authorities have introduced one way driving in many roads and also one side the road only for parking. Please befo entering a road or lane find the correct way.
Bye Pass Road:
This is 25 km long express highway bui maintained and operated by M/s L & T, conecting Avinashi Road, Trichy Road, Pollachi Road, Palghat Road etc. Usage of this bye pass road reduces vehicular traffic inside Coimbatoi city.
It also reduces the travelling distance by 35 to 40 km, and travelling time by not less tha an hour. The user has to pay a toll each time they pass through the road. There is seperal tariff for Cars, Vans, Busses, Heavy Vehicle.
Athupalam Toll Gate:
This is situated south of Ukkadam, on the River Noyyal. All the vehicles passing through it to the southern cities, has to cross it. The road and bridge are Built, Operated and maintained by M/s L & T. The users should pay a toll whenever they cross it.
All vehicles (except 2 wheelers, 3 wheeler autos) going to Pollachi or Palghat have to pay the prescribed toll. At present the tariff is - Cars - Rs 7, Vans - Rs 20, Buses - Rs 20 Multi Axled Vehicles - Rs 31.
Travel as you like:
State Bus Transport Ltd has introduced a novel scheme for the tourists / businessmen / general public to buy a one time ticket - and Travel any number of times in their buses during that period. Available packages - one day, one week, one month etc.
Flyovers - on Pollachi Road Railway line - are long awaited, south of SIDCO Industrial Estate. Once it is open, it will reduce lot of waiting time at the Railway gate. All the vehicles going in Pollachi Road to Palani, Udamalpet etc and Industrialists, students will save time.
